Natasha Sturgis is a choreographer and artist creating compelling, fascinating work. With an original style which is raw, grounded and highly physicality, Sturgis independent works are often motivated by feminist o themes, and are created and live in a place which is theatrical and accessible. As a choreographer and movement director she has created work for theatres, site-specific performance, galleries and music videos.
LIVE WORK
Sturgis has collaborated with musicians Joji Malani, R.T.Fax and Lady Chika for March Dance Festival at 107 Projects, creating CLAMBAKE a site specific show which was an immersive dance, music and art performance. Her show The Land Of Her performed in London at Camden Fringe Festival 2019 (Camden Peoples Theatre) and Resolution Festival 2020 (The Place Threatre). This work was developed in Sydney as a recipient of Ausdance NSW’s DAIR Artist in Residence 2020 and is set to have its debut performance at Sydney Fringe Festival 2023. Sturgis’s short work ‘For My Sister’ performed at the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company’s Nitzotzot Festival (Kibbutz Ga’aton) in 2017.
COLLABORATIONS
Natasha collaborated with music artists 700Feel and Joji Malani for the Art Gallery of NSW, choreographing an immersive performance for the Archie Party in 2022.
In 2020, Natasha co-choreographed Hungry Skin with Evie Morris, a short dance film directed by Jasmin Simmons commissioned by KxT Bakehouse Theatre.
Natasha has collaborated with visual artists Monika Dorniak & Marie Kaus on art installation ‘Looking for a space of certainty’ for Neukolln 48hr Festival (Berlin).
In 2017 Natasha worked with Self Help Arts Company on their multi-disciplinary installation ‘Heads Will Roll’, directed by Margot Politis and facilitated by Kay Armstrong.
Natasha enjoys working with local music artists, choreographing and dancing for a number of music videos including Pei Music, Emma Louise, Fractures, Sandtimer and Jessica Joy Allen.
MOVEMENT DIRECTION
Natasha has been a movement director for many live theatre and screen projects. Credits include BiPolar Me by Ceri Ashe (Popty Pings Theatre, UK), Dumped by Emily Howarth (Brighton Fringe Festival, Calm Down Dear Festival, UK) and Anthropocene (Hueman Theatre Company, UK). She has worked with Vanessa Marion on research and development for her upcoming short film Mansploitation.
PERFORMER & DANCE ARTIST
As a performer, Sturgis has had an exciting and eclectic experience. She has worked with choreographers including Tra Mi Dinh, Billy Keoh, Mathew Mizyed, Omer Backley-Astrachan, Joshua Thompson and Missy Gilbert.
Her passion for music, art and theatre and her versatility as a dancer have allowed her to exist as an artist within many scenes. Sturgis has appeared in music videos for the likes of Pei Music, Emma Louise and Lamalo amongst others.
She was a member of DUTI Dance Company’s 2016 season UNDER MINDS.
CLASSES & WORKSHOPS
Since 2020, Sturgis has been a regular at DUTI Dance Studios teaching contemporary dance, creating a safe and supportive environment allowing people to learn strong technique fundamentals, connect to their body and enjoy the pleasure of movement.
With over 15 years of teaching experience Natasha is able to deliver high quality classes, workshops and intensive courses for professionals, students and non-professionals. She spent a year in Israel, learning different movement styles, including Gaga technique at Suzanne Dellal Centre and repertoire from the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company. She continues to further her knowledge and training, learning from Australian Dance Theatre, Stephanie Lake, Legs On The Wall, Dance Makers Collective, Shaun Parker Company, The Farm Company and STRUT Workshop Crystal Pite.
